A very beginner question. How to play chords.

When playing chords with my left hand I don't know whether I hold the chord down for the whole measure or do I vamp the chord to the timing of the music.

Welcome to the forum!

You would usually hold the chord for the length of the note written - where the music requires you to play the chord repeatedly it would be shown in the sheet music. That being said, if you want to play it differently then go ahead!

I only know two chords-- C and G.

Really comes down to the instrument - eg piano? organ? arranger?

On an arranger, you can play the chord and let go - the mahcine will take over until you play a different chord.

Learn a few more and you can pretty much play anything using transpose

F major
A minor
D minor
E minor

(they are all "white keys")
