I have had my QS8.1 for twelve years and it has worked just fine. I love it. A problem has arisen. My "user bank" and all of its sounds has stopped working. I have re initialized the keyboard by pressing 0 and 3 as I power it back on but it hasn't fixed the problem.

I owned a 6.1 many years ago. I don't completely recall the architecture but the internal user sounds might be retained on power off via a battery backup (although I'm not certain). If this is the case then what has most likely happened is that the battery is not holding enough charge to retain the user settings. So you might need to get the battery replaced.

Thanks Delaware, Another friend suggested the battery as well. I'll open r up and have a look. I revived a DX7 that way.The DX7 battery was soldered in so I got a cartridge for a coin cell, soldered in some leads, and made future changes easier.

Hi D Dave,
I tried changing the battery but that didn't work. I did some more research and finally found a website, http://67.192.162.144/qs81 (not the main Alesis website) that had a .sys file for the QS8.1 "User" bank. It had a .txt extension but thankfully it saved as a .sys file. I used my SysExLibrarian software to upload the files to my QS8 via its MIDI in port. After three failures I disconnected the MIDI cabel, turned off the QS8, turned it back on, re connected the MIDI cable and the SYSEXLibrarian program finally added it to the list of destinations. I hit the play button on the SysExLibraian and was delighted to see a message on my QS8 saying it was downloading MIDI information. I switched over to preset one on the QS8 and back to user and voila! all my user sounds were restored.
