Hi,

I'm thinking about getting a Roland Fantom. Do you recommend studio monitors or an amplifier? I will mostly be playing in my personal studio.

I would like to get some new monitors. I have old M-Audios. I like the KRKs they sound really nice.

"Mostly " in the studio? Get a pair of QSC K8.2's. You can use them as stage monitors as well.
I think jmemcse honed in on the important variable... since "mostly" is not "entirely," what other usage needs to be considered? Because "studio monitors" is the common answer for someone who is *always* playing in a home/studio environment, but are generally well-suited for little else.

FWIW, I saw that Amazon has the E5's on sale for $89/each. It's not the newer XT model but that's an amazing price if that is what you'd want. Not sure how long the deal will last but just sharing.

I prefer powered PA Speakers because they give a better frequency response for me. For small settings Harbinger 15”, for large settings Bass Boss DV 12.

My studio is all discombobulated. I've got most of my gear set up in the living room with the Christmas tree, and have spent the last few days singing and playing Christmas carols, using my Laney AH-300's for monitors. Gonna put the studio back together after the holidays. I'll need new studio monitors- my son took my 8" Gemini's for his studio.

For the OP, I guess I am curious as to what you do (or want to do) in your studio and what tasks the (studio) monitors would be called upon to do. Would they be used in a capacity where they'd need to be "flat" and generate a sound that would be especially true for knowing exactly what you've got, the kind of speaker you'd be using for mixing or mastering recordings? Would these speakers be maybe 3' or 4' from your ears pointed directly towards you? Or would you be using them as just a pleasant listening experience for yourself in the comfort of a 10'x10' extra bedroom where "flat" may not be the most desirable sound? Or would you intend for these same speakers / monitors produce sound pressure levels equivalent to a Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engine for yours and your neighbors 1/2 mile around's listening pleasure?

Bigger doesn't always mean better. Not that there is anything wrong with size but there comes a point where having a reason for a larger size would seem practical at least. Context might be an important consideration to you and help you decide what you need and want. One person's idea of a "studio" might be way different than another person's idea of a "studio". And even the genre of music may matter quite a lot. A Fantom is a great keyboard that can produce a LOT of different sounds across many styles.

Just a thought.

For my living room studio, the Eris E5 has beautiful dispersion and clarity. They are in fact nearfield monitors and I do my final mixes with a pair of Koss Headphones anyway, but the sound is comparable in quality to my Klipsh 2.1 stereo system and right now don't let the price fool you. Amazon is currently selling them below half of list price.
