Hey guys,

I am looking for a stand alone keyboard/synth that will do the following and not $3000.00.

1. Piano sounds
2. Synth Sounds

The trick is I want it in mini size. I would like it around 24" wide. Ideally it would have a few small drum pads on it that I could load samples for different sounds. It would also be light enough to mount on my mic stand and 1/4" or XLR outputs......

I play in a cover band and when two guitars are not needed I would like to put stings in the background, or play light piano in the background. If it had the drum pads on it, I could play accent crashes or have a siren programmed in it.

Do they make such as thing?

24" is a hard limit. In that size all you'll find are toys or two octave MIDI controllers.

Any reason why you'd not be happy with a small Akai controller and Garageband running on an iPad?

Off the top of my head that's the only hardware that would meet your specs.

I don't have an ipad, but that may be the only direction I have to go. I just don't want a 3ft keyboard because usually the stages are tight enough as it is. I need to research the ipad and all the possibilities......

Thanks for your response!

An alternative to an iPad would also include a used Korg TR Rack or Yamaha Motif Rack module along with a small controller.

What is the minimum number of keys you require in order to play piano effectively? There is a physical width limitation based on the keybed width. Even a 49 key Novation Impulse is 33 inches wide (9 inches wider than your maximum). How could you EFFECTIVELY play piano on a 49 key keyboard? Almost half the keys are missing, Instead why don't you think about repositioning yourself on the stage so that you play on a 90 degree angle when on a tight stage (I've done it in the past) and therefore the width of the keyboard is a non-factor. I personally would not compromise my playing to satisfy the small stage requirement. Ask any drummer to gig with only a snare drum and one cymbal in order to save space on the stage and see what his reaction would be. Don't compromise your playing to satisfy the stage requirement; instead look for creative ways to position yourself on the stage to satisfy the requirement.
