Last night I attended a performance of The Goldberg Variations performed on a two manual harpsichord at Stetson University. Holy crap! It will be decades before I could attempt anything that difficult. Also, I've heard that they're usually played on piano. I'm trying to figure out how. The two hands would intertwine with each other if they were on a single manual. You'd need a doctor to untangle the fingers. This is one of the few pieces where Bach specified that they should be performed on a two manual harpsichord.
