Congrats on picking up a set of home monitors that should end up serving you well for the next 20 years or hopefully more.
Some things simply can't be properly explained in words.

As regards gain 1/4 is a good setting, as a rule of thumb up to half you should be OK but at higher settings the design of the Gain circuit becomes more prevalent and artefacts generated by the circuit components could make their presence felt in the output sound.
