Midi to USB - nothing happening

i am trying to connect the midi ports of a Roland Juno Di to a laptop. I have a cable with a box in the middle. But led lights on 'in' and 'out' not lighting up. What settings do I need to apply to the Juno?

Make sure that the MIDI plug marked "IN" is plugged into the MIDI port marked "OUT," and that the MIDI plug marked "OUT" is plugged into the MIDI port marked "IN."

This may seem backward, but the MIDI goes OUT of the keyboard and IN to the computer, and likewise the MIDI goes OUT of the computer and IN to the keyboard.
