Or is it just this area? Various times over this past year I looked on craigs list etc for a low-end keyboard and found little to nothing. Are people just keeping these more now?

Between trade wars, supply chains and corporate greed most of my gear has doubled in price these days. This logically translates into higher used prices as well.

Blame the pumpkin skinned president for defaulting on China's outstanding debt :p

No Bill it's not just your area.
In the UK we have Ebay, Gumtree, Facebook Marketplace and a few other 2nd hand sites. Prices are what Sellers are HOPING to get for their used keyboards, organs, guitars, and digital pianos.
Some Sellers have very inflated prices for what they THINK their stuff is worth, but they don't take on boatd that the global rule of BUYING applies. That is... It's only worth what somebody will pay you for it.
Sellers put stuff like.....
**Cost blah blah blah when new! (Completely irrelevant). Who cares! NOW it's 2nd hand.
**First to see will buy! (Usually old tat)
And my 2 favourites...
1. In good condition full working order, plays well despite 4 broken keys and cigarette burns.
2. Was working last time I played it..... meaning, dragged down from a dusty attic, probably not covered, so full of cobwebs and the odd spider... and ready to catch fire the minute you power it up!
Shop around and barter is the best advice. Set your sights high and be prepared to travel to get what you're after.
But you guys expecting mega bucks for 10 year old gigged to death Tyros 4's and 5's for example need to get real.

The other reality is, unfortunately, people are just hanging onto what they've got, due to the state of economies worldwide. But we won't go there!

Depends upon what you mean by low end keyboard.

In 2017 when I bought my first new Korg Pa it cost me £1000.

Two years later I sold it on eBay for £800 after their extortionist fees had been extracted.

The shop where I bought it from had only offered £500 for itagainst a new Pa4X.

Soddin tight assed shop lost my business after that, probably about £8,000 worth of sales gone elsewhere.

I look on eBay and see keyboards, and think the sellers must be idiots, or rather the buyers are who do not get the bargain.

There are three Korg Pa4X 61 keyboards showing, £2000 to £2400, these were only £2400 when new and the 76 key version £2700.

Supply and demand people.

People are willing to pay what the traffic will bear.

Personally I tell lowballers to go pound sand if they're not willing to pay a fair price for my stuff.

Like PT Barnum once said, there's a sucker born every minute. ;)

My experience is that if you wait, bargains (or motivated sellers) will eventually show up on eBay, reverb.com, etc., as well as local listings like Craigslist or Facebook marketplace. However, it does take patience and effort to search those sites. My $.02.

Low end generally equals junk. Junk generally equals breakage. So many low end keyboards break and are generally sent to the junk pile. And if they are low end you're more likely to just purchase a new one since they are inexpensive.

Actually, as a seller, I've played the waiting game to sell gear many times myself.

Lowballers make ridiculous offers but the Toronto used market is huge and very active.

Time of year makes a huge difference as well.

Sales usually drop off in spring and summer while the approach of winter motivates people to invest in gear.

And like I said, new buyers pick up on the classifieds daily if not weekly.

The lowballing maggots who offer nothing tend to live on the ads forums and can safely be ignored after first contact. :p

I have sold two keyboards on fleaBay, but I am happy with the cost of what they sold for.

Not enamoured with the extortionate fees on that site.

Never used the Auction section for the more expensive items, I had a figure that I wanted (a) , added fees (b) and to it and then added a bit more.

Usually set Open to Offers with the auto acceptable price being (a) + (b), “your joking, right” being the auto response going to those with Scottish pockets.

The killer with keyboards and guitars is that they are large and heavy with very expensive postage costs, my Pa700 cost me £100+ to send.

Interesting that... I too stopped using Ebay for quite a long time due to their exorbitant fees.

Then there's the ridiculous "Reserve not reached" ..... Bye Chancer, you aren't even worth bothering with.. Ass hat!

But there are bargains, and genuine sellers, and the good news is that atm there are NO Fees for buying or selling on Ebay except for motors...

So maybe sellers will get a little less greedy? Yeah Right! 😂 😂 😂 See flying pig! 🐽

Me too . . I dumped ebay as a seller.
They are too aggressive and controlling.
Buyers get all Rights to claims and many are false claims. Sellers have no rights. Ebay has controlled over your bank account. They scrapped PayPal too.
Increasing fees makes it difficult to make sales with any reasonable financial return as well.

Quit Craigslist.

Use Offer Up.

Many musicians in CA have left CL completely and using Offer Up instead. Five times the content.

My various experiences in buying via Craigslist have all been positive so far. A few examples are:

1:- an Ensoniq ZR-76 in mint condition, complete with a quality road case for $50, being sold by a used computer store which had taken it in as a trade.
2:- a Yamaha AR-100 organ for $150 being sold by a thrift (charity) store which was closing that day. I had to make a 1- hour drive to get it before it was junked. It really only cost me a couple of gallons of gas as I had just sold a pair of PA speakers for $150, which I had been given for free by a church.
3:- a Yamaha CP-300 for $100 which had some damage to the front rail which had jammed some keys and broken one. it took a little bit of time to straighten it but after replacing one key and reseating the jammed ones, it plays perfectly.

Like others, I no longer sell on ebay and mainly use Reverb and CL. A neighbor suggested OfferUp but I've yet to try it.

Some people still sell serious gear on these services. Not DIY fixer upper rejects from a yard sale . :D :D :D
Yep, I've proved that many times. Plus, on some rare occasions, it's possible to find a free deal. My Technics KN-2400 (admittedly not high tech by today's standards) was on CL for free as it wasn't working . Turns out it I only needed to replace a $5 voltage regulator to fix it.

MOST people have neither the time, inclination nor talent to track down and repair surface mount crap these days.

Fixer uppers of that calibre tend to be decades old and subject to all types of rot.

And even then, chances are Joe Clawhammer is buying a pig in a poke. :p

Personally a 30 year old non functioning Casio is due to be repurposed into a boat anchor :p.

:D :D :D
