I am learning to play Pachelbel's Canon in D. I am trying to work out the fingering. Do I need to lift my entire left hand each time I make a leap?

Depends upon the span of your fingers!

When I play it I use left hand fingers 5, 4, 3, 1 to play the sequence then just move my whole hand to play the next sequence.

Then when the pattern changes to the right hand I play 1, 2, 3, 5

It is what you are most comfortable with that matters.

On the ascending bass lines I would probably go with 5, 3 (or 2), 1, then cross my 2 or 3 finger over my thumb to get the fourth note, as my hands aren't particularly big and don't span from top to bottom note. This way I'd be able to maintain legato during each arpeggio.

But as Col rightly says, do whatever feels comfortable.

I did play it before I posted but should have added that I have a comfortable white note span of 9 notes hence the method I described was easy for me.
