When I have a speaker (amp) plugged into the PHONE/OUTPUT jack on my PSR-E423 the drums sound wrong. If I unplug the jack it plays on the internal speakers fine. I've scoured the manual for settings to play with but came up empty. Even played with the function/MasterEQ settings to no avail.

It sounds like it's missing a left/right channel. The high hat sound is there, and what sounds like an echo of the bass drum beat, but the main bass downbeat is missing. I've tried several styles and it's the same for all of them.

The cable that you're connecting to your speaker will need a TRS style jack at the end plugged into the keyboard.

Not sure what you'll need at the other end. Depends on your speaker.

Yes, the PHONES/OUTPUT jack takes a stereo TRS plug. :) If the jack on your amp takes a mono TS plug, you can use a TRS-to-TS adapter to combine the two channels into a mono signal.
