Hello, I am strictly a home hobbyist who does a little recording on my own for my own entertainment. Currently using a Korg SV2 for all the non-drum sounds and recording into an old BOSS Multitracker. The multitracker is about 20 yrs old now and showing signs of not wanting to go on much longer. My questions are about what is available today that is pretty straightforward to use...I am NOT interested in a computer setup...would much prefer either a current multitracker ( if they are still made), or possibly a keyboard that does recording.
I have looked through a pile of arrangers and workstations and to me the videos look not-so-straightforward...many many button or screen pushes and layers and way more features than I would ever use.
I like the simplicity of the Korg i3 but fear that its' sounds will not satisfy me.
Is there such a thing as a keyboard that will record very logically and still have very good sound quality? Or are there still any stand-alone multitrackers that will record without too many steps?
I don't have a budget in mind...I'd consider any options if the fit is right I would find a way to make it work.
Really appreciate anybody who has some thoughts on this...

Zoom, Tascam, PreSonus and others all produce multi track recorders, some are not only recorders but Mixers as well.

Many models for all budgets.

As for a Keyboard with inbuilt Sequencer/Recorder there are many but they do vary in complexity and features.

In the Arranger world Korg IMO have the best onboard Recording.

In a non Arranger keyboard then Korg’s do have the recording feature as do Roland.

I am not a fan of Yamaha so I know very little about their kit.

Thank-you for the reply. Looking at a keyboard option first...say a Korg Pa series...maybe I shouldn't get as concerned about the complexity as long as it is fairly straightforward to do some basic recording. For example, presently when I record anything I just play it live and hit record...no punching in or step by step, no moving drum beats around or notes. I am an old dog and don't have time to learn some of those new tricks...so, can I assume that to pick my sound, add any effects and possibly alter them slightly...say to adjust a phaser on an ep...and then record is something like this pretty straightforward on a Korg Pa?

I will look further into the multitracker options available as well as my gut tells me they may be more intuitive for me. I can get the sound the way I want it directly from the SV2 (and its' editor). The recorder I have records straight to a CD, which I love because that it what I have available to me...CD player in the car and several at home. I know I need to evolve as that might not be an option any longer. As I said, this is just for my own ears at home really.

use a digital mixer such as the Allen and Heath CQ-18T. Plug all your instruments in, record directly in the mixer.

As far as multirecorders go have been using Zoom Livetrak 12 since 2020. It has just enough channels and capability to also meet future needs. When it's being used it is straight from keyboard with no computer involved.

Personally I use a 24 track Tascam. Great for anything I want to throw at it. :)
Ok great, thank-you...I will look at that as an option as well. Good to know they are still around!

There's an active Tascam Users forum as well, and if you get one, buy Phil Tipping's beautifully rewritten User Manual -- as the one that Tascam provides is horrible. Phil's is a true "how to use" guide and he's also put up a large number of tutorial videos on youtube.

Awesome, thank-you for that. For someone like me, a well-written manual is invaluable.
