As a beginner, I want to try to ensure my dynamics are "correct" when practicing and playing.
I'm using a piano VST and it has the option to adjust the velocity curve based on how I play - is this a bad idea? I can see how it may be useful to personalise my settings, but then I also wonder if that's really only suitable for more advanced players and that it will maybe just compensate for bad technique? Shall I leave it at the default?
Also, I was thinking of using MIDI data as feedback on my practice. Are there any standards velocities that correspond with typical dynamic markings e.g.
ppp ≈16
pp ≈ 32
p ≈ 48
mp ≈ 64
mf ≈ 80
f ≈ 96
ff ≈112
fff ≈ 127
I appreciate nothing will be exact but I'm teaching myself and thought recording MIDI performances would offer good feedback.
Appreciate any thoughts or pointers!
