Casio WK-1200 does not switch tones. The keypad takes the entry and it is displayed on the screen..... but tone is always stuck at 017/percussive organ.

I'll open it and vac/blow out the dust.
Any thoughts on the cause of the problem?
I read schematics etc.

Happyrat1 jumped in with TTLF ......things to look for.
Any other thoughts before I open it up?
I have electronics tools, vom, Oscope etc.....
Thx for your time.

I had just finished writing the music for an art/poetry exhibit and wanted to give the poet/lyricist a better glimpse of the Desert Native American theme moving thru the Universe...... StarGlobe....... the WK had enough onboard to get it done.
I can make people want to leave Earth as fast as any piccolo player can. :D

Do you own an ESR meter? If not I'd strongly suggest getting one. Easiest way to check for dead capacitors while still in circuit.

The cheap ones from China run about $60.

One of the best diagnostic tools you can have in your arsenal.

Also handy to have a logic probe and pulser if you have to troubleshoot at the chip level.

Thx

Don't have the gear you mention but friends should as they only work on the bench...... marine electronics. Radar, Sonar, Autopilots, SatComs, HF Radios etc etc.

I'll get started by doing what you suggested and look for
schematics etc online.

Will blow alto flute over some rhythms to give the poet/lyricist a ballpark idea in the meantime.

Are you saying pulling caps etc to test ain't no fun? ;)
What could go wrong!!!

Actually easiest and first thing to check for if you haven't already is a stuck rhythm button.

It may be stuck or gummed up and forcing the keys into rhythm mode.

The keypad will talk with the display and the tone names/numbers will change on the display..... but the sound stays at 017/percuss organ.

I just found a service manual.

Thx

All the same I'd massage all the control buttons just to check if one of them is stuck on.

Doesn't look like there is a master reset.
I know with marine autopilots we do a master reset after the captain has pushed to many buttons before calling a tech to make it right.

There should be a soft reset in the menus somewhere. Usually called "Factory Settings" or "Factory Reset."

Not likely to help with this problem though.

It might be too old. It's almost 20 years old.

More likely a hardware fault anyway. Probably oxidized contact on a ribbon connector.

I am a little late with a little info. Very busy and did not read 'til now.
I have a Casio WK-1350. Perhaps they might be similar.
On page E12 of the manual is "Resetting the keyboard"
1) Remove all batteries from the keyboard and dis-connect the AC adaptor.
2) Hold down the POWER button for about 20 seconds.

On page E-9 of the WK-1200 User's Guide it says the following (I've added underscoring for emphasis):

Electrical Power
The settings and memory data described above are retained as long as the
keyboard is being supplied with electrical power. Unplugging the AC adap-
tor when batteries are not loaded or when loaded batteries are dead cuts
off the keyboard's electrical power supply. This causes all settings to be
initialized to their factory defaults and clears all data stored in memory.
