From another thread:
The MU1000 and 2000 were level 3 XG sound modules (never sold outside Japan I believe, though they can be had used) in the same case as the MU128.
They too could host PLG cards and also had USB (version 1.1(?)) MIDI (audio???), and a fibre optic audio output.

This may help:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamaha_MU-series

The ones with 64 parts should be XG Level 3-- MU128, MU500, MU1000, MU1000EX, MU2000, and MU2000EX. I don't know about keyboard models or other tone generator/sound module series. As for the "four MIDI ports," I think they usually consisted of three sets of MIDI In/Out ports, plus one USB-MIDI port.

Apologies, I should have checked things out before writing.
The MU128 and the MU1000 and 2000 have four MIDI ports on the back. Two MIDI inputs, A and B, which access 16 channels each.
The others are the usual "out" and "thru".
But they all have a "to host" miniature DIN(?) socket input which allows transmission to all four MIDI ports of these MUs, thus allowing access to 64 channels. These via an RS2332c socket on a PC or Mac.
In addition the MU1000 and 2000 have USB (1.1 only I believe) sockets and, an optical digital audio out.
Here's a couple of piccies:

First the MU128

Then the MU1000:
