Hi Mr Dawson, I have just bought a CTK6000 and would like to say thanks for the definition file. All I need to do now is to learn how to play the keyboard!!
Thanks again

Hello Mr. Dawson,

I realize I'm replying to a year old thread but hopefully you still check in here once in a while?

Anyway, I was just wondering, if you still find yourself with free time on your hands if you'd consider creating an INS file for the new Casio XW-P1. Casio has done a remarkable job of documenting this extraordinary synth with complete documentation of the MIDI specs as well as the operations manual and the patch list in an appendix.

The PDF files are available at this link: http://support.casio.com/manualfile.php?rgn=1&cid=008013001

In a worst case scenario, I plan to create the INS file myself sometime in the near future, but only if none shows up on the net within the next month or two. For me it would mean basically reinventing the wheel by having to learn the basic formula for creating an INS file as well as cutting, pasting and reformatting some 3000 entries without any previous experience in such a project.

Truth be told, I'd far rather be making music on my keyboard than writing scripts and programs for it.

If you'd deem this to be a worthy project of your efforts I cannot express how much help this would be to me, as well as the thousands of other brand new XW-P1 owners out there who find themselves in the same boat.

Thanks for listening,
Gary

Good News Folks!!!

An XW-P1 INS file has been created by Mike Martin of Casio USA and debugged by Craig Anderton of Harmony Central and myself after a long and sleepless night.

I am in no way affiliated with Casio USA nor Harmony Central other than as a participant on their forums and all the usual legal disclaimers apply including no guarantees of suitability nor that it might not burn down your home and rape your children while you sleep ;)

Without any further ado, I present a working INS file for the Casio XW-P1...

Enjoy ;)

Gary

Dawson,
Awesome work. I use 2 WK-7500s. I am just now going to connedt one of them to my DAW using Sonar 3 Producer and Studio Edition. I will report back.

Dawson,
Your WK-7500 .ins file is near perfect just a little incomplete. Here is the drum messages to add directly to the end of the file. Thanks for all of your effort,
Regards, Stephe

I appended the drum "key" code to your ins file for the CTK-7000/WK-7500. That enables the midi "keyboard edit" window to display the drum names. It also makes the "notation edit" window work as well for perdussion sheet music. I have had no luck with the DSP integration through Sonar. But Casio was nice enough to send me a link to the implementation documentation. SO I can share it with you. http://support.casio.com/en/manual/manualfile.php?cid=008002021 I hope this helps. I am looking forward to your DSP implementation. Thanks again, Stephe

Greetings,

As I have posted here I am using 2 WK-7500 Keyboards in real world applications. One is set up in the control room of my project studio. And the other is at my bands rehearsal space. I have been trying to find an instrument definition file to complete the interface between my PC running Sonar 3 Producer and Studio Edition and the Casio WK-7500. Well after downloading Mr, Dawson's file and fine tuning it, I have a working .ins file that is working perfectly. I don't know how to use the internal DSPs with Sonar. So I can't speak to that. But all of the tones are available through the patch librarian. This includes the drum note names. If you are using a Casio CTK-7000 or WK-7500 this will make your life a bit easier. I have uploaded the file as a text file. So you will nees to Download the file "Casio CTK-7000 WK-7500 v6.txt". Rename the file repacing the .txt extension with .ins. Then simply follow Sonar's instructions for importing the the .ins file into you software. Thanks again Mr. Dawson for getting the ball rolling.

Happy sequencing,
Stephe

YES! That's exactly right. Except that MIDI files you might download from other sources could be arranged for other keyboards. Or much more likely, just flagged to use the GM voices. Then you have to manually select the tones in your editor using its "patch browser" or whatever method they call it, to tell it which tone to use on which track (or notes).

Now there ya got me stymied, I wouldn't be the best one to ask. I've only "dabbled" with using the various editors. Not becoming too familiar with any single one of them, nor ever using them to create any complete compositions, (multi-track, etc.). From what I understand though, Reaper's benefit is that you can insert and edit a MIDI track just as you would any analog source. Whereas (from what little I know) a program like Cakewalk is more dedicated to MIDI editing, with the after-thought ability to insert analog tracks.

I'd urge you to get advice from someone more familiar with MIDI software than I am, one who actually uses it to produce final arrangements, in order to know what would be best from that side of the fence. To avoid any household stress levels more than they are, maybe just play with Anvil Studio for a bit. It might be all you'll need (and with a little futzing around can also use these Instrument Definition files, if I can only remember how I did that now :) ). If Anvil Studio is not enough, then you'll know to test demo versions from other sources.

I have to admit, Anvil Studio seems rather "clunky" in the way you have to select various features and functions in the editor, compared to something like Cakewalk. But in talented hands it can probably do everything that Cakewalk can do. The interface just isn't as "pretty". Which has never been a deal-breaker for me when it comes to software of any kind. I'd rather have a capable workhorse than a pretty-filly that's only good for impressing others.

I have used most versions of Cakewalk Software. I find that it is pretty intuitive once you have the instrument definition file conquered. I have also used Cubase by Steinberg. It is not as intuitive in my opinion. I count these two vendors as the most professional. I have produced 5 CDs using Cakewalk and Sonar all the way to mastering. If your eventual goal is to compose, arrange, record, master and share music. I can't say enough about Cakewalk. I would recommend learning to use the tool you will get the most life out of. Learning a lesser piece of software and then having to replace when you hit the wall of it's limitations is a real bummer. Which is why I don't even talk about them. I just use there old install CDs for wall art.

Long time no visit.

Wow, I'm so glad that all that preliminary work I did is finally coming in handy for people. :)

And even better that people with more knowledge than I were able to correct and improve on them!

It always sucks being the first one on the dance-floor, especially when you can't even dance and don't even know the tune. Fumble and flop-around as I might ... it sometimes gets some others to try too, out of pity if for no other reason. :)

I doubt I'll be upgrading to one of the better keyboards, but I did save copies of all the new INS's people made. It's nice to see what happened to the original babies after they finally grew-up. :)

aside: I got a chuckle out of this comment from happyrat1, "...and debugged by Craig Anderton of Harmony Central and myself after a long and sleepless night."

And that's with having a file to start with to debug! And just ONE file mind you, and TWO people working on it! Who knew what they were doing too! :) I feel vindicated. LOL

It basically took Mike Martin a solid two weeks to come up with the XW-P1 file and he helped DESIGN the keyboard in the first place :) Craig and I only applied a little spit and polish, adding a semi-colon here and there where typos needed correcting. And the file is still not perfect, lacking the individual drum maps but still plenty serviceable enough for my purposes and useful for producing decent cakewalk sequences with the XW-P1.

After that I laid my hands on an M-Audio Venom for super cheap last xmas and wrote a complete INS file on my own using the XW file as a model. It DOES get easier the second time around and again I dunno if I still have the controllers section right or not but it seems to work well enough also.

Anyway, I hope you don't mind, but I've also shared your original WK and CTK INS files on every forum I possibly could, including the casiomusicforums.com site and the yahoo casio and cakewalk user groups.

I'm a firm believer in building up redundancy of critical files since when they're hosted on a single site, they tend to disappear into oblivion in a few years.

Thanks again for your initial works. :)

It's nice to see someone have an appreciation for what I went through with me having NO examples to start with and this being my very first MIDI keyboard too. LOL Wasn't a learning "curve", was a learning "hyperbolic exponential function". :) And then the controller codes too? Whoda thunk I had convert hex to decimal (or was that vice-versa?) values for those too.

Happy to see them being shared. It's why I packrat all I can about any related field of interest. (Reminding me, I need a new tera-drive, filled up the last one already.) All too many times a favorite resource went kablooey with a follow-up of hours going "aww sh**, aww sh**.... gawdamnit!"

It did help immensely that Casio had those complete docs on their keyboards, and that I luckily had the right PDF editing tools to extract the massive columns of lists of data from those (twisting PDF's 90-degrees to get columns of data were the real pissers) and then again another editor to allow me to sort on a column hierarchy. If I didn't have those, I doubt I would have embarked on hand-typing in all that.

What's really nice now is that, I think, no matter what new boards come out, with the way Casio seems to just build on their older foundations of features, all these files will be helpful starter-fodder for any needed updates.

We all done good. :)

Hi,
I'm a Casio ctk 4000 owner venturing into the world of midi music for the purpose of "manipulating" sourced midi files via Anvil Studio DAW (with the added Pro Mix accessory) to create backing tracks.

I've read your very informative forum posts (which I'm still trying to get my head around) and am preparing to see if I can copy & load the ins file into the DAW.
I'm also wondering re your mention of:
btw: If anyone wants the tone-list for these models that's sorted by bank number and program change number, as I first did for the CTK-5000, post a reply to let me know. I kept my work-flow files on this, just in case. It might come in handy if you need to create Instrument Definitions for MIDI editing software other than Cakewalk.[/QUOTE] this would be helpful for me?

I see you provided all this information back in 2011 so hopefully you still have all your reference data.
I tried many demos of DAW's but found that Anvil was the simplest to use & allows me to manipulate the files easily to get the results I want e.g. I have 200 midi song files which Anvil opens & plays with one click, providing full editing of16 tracks. It's currently running through Soundblaster SBX Prostudio USB sound card on my laptop but can only play onboard std GM files, hence me trying to utilise the Casio.

Looking forward to your reply,

Regards,
Bruce

To make up for my error of mentioning the CTK-4000 in the above, I went ahead and downloaded the supplemental data for that model. As long as I had the work-flow down and all was still fresh in my mind, below is the Cakewalk "Instrument Definition" file contents for that model as well. This will also work with the LK-270 & WK-200 models. They use the very same tones, banks, and tone numbers.

As explained above, copy ALL the text inside the code list-box, copy into NotePad or some other plain text editor, then save it. Suggested filename: "Casio CTK-4000 LK-270 WK-200.ins"

So there you have it, some long-time-missing INS files for some Casio keyboards. 6 different models are now supported properly in Cakewalk.

btw: If anyone wants the tone-list for these models that's sorted by bank number and program change number, as I first did for the CTK-5000, post a reply to let me know. I kept my work-flow files on this, just in case. It might come in handy if you need to create Instrument Definitions for MIDI editing software other than Cakewalk.
